October
Begin to clean up the garden for winter.
Scatter superphosphate around Paeonia and other heavy
feeders.
Compost leaves that are beginning to drop and other herbacious plant parts. This compost will make good food for other plants in your garden. (If you don’t have room to compost, take the leaves to a local composting site. Chances are that you can get compost there when you need it as well.)
Mark perennials that you would like to divide and plant in other locations.
After hard frosts, clip excess Hedera helix (Ivy) and Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Virginia creeper) around walls and windows.
Cut back Monarda and members of the Mentha (Mint) family. Get rid of any debris where fourlined plant bugs over-winter.
Cut back Iris, Hemerocallis and Paeonia to the ground to get rid of and diseased foliage.
Don't cut back ferns-fronds protect tender crowns.
Don't cut back ornamental grasses (unless you prefer a clean-lined winter look), all varieties of Liriope, Epimedium, Sambucus canadensis, Salix purpurea 'Nana', Cotinus, Buddleia, and Caryopteris. You decide about the rest of the material to be added to the cut/don't cut list.
